Box Tops for Education
Box Tops For Education is a program every school should sign up for. It’s a fairly easy way to raise money. The concept is simple, General Mills has a coupon attached to their products that is worth 10 cents each. A school would sign up for the program, collect as many coupons as they can and then turn them in for money. The volunteer that signs up to be the coordinator would put a box in a central place, the main office for example, where box tops could be deposited. Twice a year, send the box tops in and wait for your school’s check!
Is it worth the effort? Absolutely! The effort is minimal, unless you are very successful at collecting them and then you might need a team effort to bundle the box tops and weed out expired ones. If that’s the case you will probably get a nice fat check! The top school in the nation raised over $30,000 in 2007. In my experience I have seen the local elementary school raise $800 and the local middle school $160. But whatever the amount, it is money that the school did not have before.
One of the strangest things I have discovered about box tops for education is that there is a market for them on ebay and they sometimes sell for more than they are worth. One seller explained this as many schools offer prizes or classroom parties to those who collect the most. Somehow that seems like cheating to me. On the other hand, would a school do better selling their collected box tops on ebay than turning them in?
